GOAL: For people to be aware of unhealthy school lunches and help make a difference.

Blog #1 I believe

I believe that school lunches must be healthy in order to protect the future health of our youth. Unhealthy school lunches that serve kid_eating_burger.jpgjunk food lead to many health complications. Obesity is at an all time high and being obese doesn't help anyone in anyway, unless you are training to be a sumo wrestler. Being obese can lead to many diseases such as diabetes, sky rocketing blood pressure, coronary artery disease, coronary vascular disease, heart attacks, stroke and even cancer. Obesity, in general, is a very easy preventable disease. Preventing obesity can lower your risk of all of these other diseases. To prevent obesity is simple, it’s not about working out and going to the gym six days week, which yeah would help, but what it really comes down to is what food you’re putting into your body. 40% of the top 10 leading causes of death are related in some way to obesity. I chose this topic because I am very interested in health and nutrition, and lately I have been watching what I eat and I feel healthier and overall better about myself. If kids are educated about what healthy foods they should consume, it will decrease the amount of obesity and eliminate the nasty side effects on our nation's youth.

Blog #2 Change for the good

Unhealthy School Lunches are sought to be the reason of childhood obesity. Processed food that is high in fats and sugar tend to be cheap, which is why schools all over America invest in these lunches. This is an easy issue that can be fixed…feed healthy food to the kids! Stop selling unhealthy_lunch_1.jpgsoda at school or greasy fatty foods. If this problem isn’t fixed, in the near future the number of people who suffer from obesity and diabetes will increase dramatically. Many new health complications can be entered at a young life if they are not eating healthy food. Schools need more regulated to what they are selling to the young students. If schools can’t afford to make dramatic changes in their lunch menus, then they need to try and do simple things to make school lunches healthier with the resources they have. For example, instead of deep frying chicken- bake it instead. Or give a little extra veggies to the kids, and sell whole grain bread instead of white bread.

Blog #3 The Big Problems

Like I mentioned earlier, unhealthy lunches can cause obesity and obesity leads to bigger health issues. The 'silent killer' or more commonly known as high blood pressure is one of the major leading causes of death in the U.S. High blood pressure forces the heart to work more resulting in it making it weaker over time. But it all starts at an early age, and is easy to prevent through school lunches. Also, havinghigh_blood_pressure.jpg so much cholesterol can cause plaque buildup in blood vessels, and that leads to heart attack. All of these health related issues can be and need to be taught to at a young age to help kids understand what they are putting into their body so they do not start early unhealthy habits. Obesity can shave years off of one’s life, this is not a very difficult issue to fix, feed the kids healthy food and get rid of the opportunity to eat unhealthy food.

Blog #4 Experimentation

Mrs. Q, who is an elementary school teacher decided to ear the lunch that the school provided for the children every day for the whole school year because she had accidentally forgot her own lunch.. Mrs. Q says that most of the food she consumed was pizza, french fires, hot dogs, and a 'mystery pork.' she said that the chicken nuggets were only 50% chicken. That does not sound tUSDA.jpgo healthy to me, most certainly can’t be for our nation’s youth Mrs. Q requested to hide her real identity during the interview but she stated that "if you're a parent you may not have a clue about what your kids are really eating. Lunches at my school are like overly packaged TV dinners gone bad." According to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) school lunches are heavily processed with unhealthy preservatives, as well as sodium, trans fat and sugars. The USDA also states that an ordinary school lunch usually blows by the recommended 500 milligrams of sodium, some school even serve lunches with more than 1,000 milligrams of sodium. Dr. Nestle who is a professor of nutrition food studies at NYU says that "Kids associate school with education; therefore they get the wrong impression that these kinds of foods are healthy."

Blog #5 Finally an Effort

In St. Paul Minnestoa at Galtier Magnet Elementary School, they have converted their lunch menu to more of a healthy aspect. Instead of serving highly processed food, they sell whole-grain pasta and bread and unsweetened applesauce for dessert. The elementary school also offers a salad bar with carrots, peas and tomatoes. At the end of the salad bar, they offer low fat dressings like low-fat ranch. The kids are still able to eat tacos and macaroni but they are just much healthier. For instance, the tacos are made with whole-grain taco shells and the macaroni with whole-grain pasta and low fat cheese. If one school can succeed at feeding the kids healthy foodHealth_school_luunch.jpegthen all schools can at least attempt to do it. I know that there are many other issues in society that may stand out as bigger problems. But, people are not aware of this problem because people don't know much about it. If obesity is major cause of death then we need to get the bottom of the problem, the root of the issue and demolish it. It all starts here at an early age, if we can feed our youth healthy foods, it will eliminate all the issues that trail from obesity. If people want to fight obesity this is the place to start, at an early age where it is not too late.

Blog #6 Could Breakfast be the part of the Solution?

It is also important to make sure young children are eating breakfast because studies have shown that this also helps control calorie intake for later in the day according to Daniel Millimet, who is a professor of economics at Southern Methodist University. “…kids who participated in breakfast programs tended to be heavier to begin with… Once you control for the fact that kids whodaniel_miiilemt_smu.jpeg were participating in breakfast were heavier to begin with, breakfast is actually helping to bring their weight down." How simple is that? Feed your kids with breakfast and it can help them from a superfluous amount of calorie intake! "Schools operate under a lot of constraints, and they are trying to do the best they can with what they're given," he says. "I'm sure all schools would like to have fresh vegetables that are local and organic, but that's not affordable." If the school cannot afford to make the school lunches healthy then parents need to do the best they can by making sure they eat breakfast.

There are also many other ways parents can participate in trying to keep their kids healthy and away from unhealthy school lunches. Feeding the kids breakfast is definitely a good idea and will help decrease obesity in our youth. Also, pack their lunch; invest in some healthy foods like whole grain bread and other organic foods. Nutri-grain bars and baked chips are great for lunches and are a lot healthier than other typical lunch food. Also pack them fruits and vegetableslunch_box.jpeg. If you still choose to have your kid eat school lunches, then try to monitor what they are purchasing at school. Some schools offer an online system that allows parents to monitor how what food and how much food they are buying at lunch. It is also important that parents lead by example and are cooking healthy meals at home and talking to them about eating nutritious food. Children who start eating right at an early age are at an advantage. Their bones will grow faster and stronger and they will be all around a healthy child. Showing children the right way to eat is vital to their knowledge so they keep giving their body the nutrients they need in order to stay healthy.

Almost 33% of American children fall under the obese category as of 2010. The U.S First Lady, Michelle Obama started the Let's Move campaign to fight childhood obesity in Americas youth. The main object of Let's Move is to educate schools and children about nutritious lifestyle to abate the negative impacts obesity has on young children. This is a huge issue for the state of California. In California it is a main goal for schools to take action with nutritionists and nearby farmers and food producers to provide healthy food the schools. The Organic Consumers Association's Organic School Lunch Program teaches California studentslets_move.jpeg about how food is prepared for them to eat. Also in California, many schools plant gardens to let the k ids see firsthand how fresh fruits and veggies are grown and to encourage them to eat fresh, organic food, instead of canned or processed fruits and veggies. Other states should be following in California's foot steps to do the best they can by educating children about healthy food and feeding them healthy food in the school’s cafeteria.
